Hello there !

Are you a fresh watch keeping engineer or deck officer ? Don't you have a company to join back after clearing class 4 or second mate ?

I have made a list of over 100 shipping companies (both for main fleet and offshore) along with their email ids that you can send your resume on. You may get a job if you are lucky !!
Please find the link with the list below :

Email ids of 100 Shipping Companies (Main Fleet) to Apply for a Job
Email ids of 50 Shipping Companies (Offshore) to Apply for a Job

Wow! 100 companies? Still not getting a call from a single company? You gotta give a try in offshore too.

Is it easy to get a job in offshore, is there any way ?

Well, I would say "easier than finding a job on main fleet". There are so many vessels in Indian waters under ONGC and British Gas charter. But the fact is that only about 30% of India’s offshore vessel needs are supplied by Indian shipowners such as Shipping Corp. of India Ltd, Great Offshore Ltd, Greatship (India) Ltd, Garware Offshore Services Ltd etc. So, the rest 70% is fulfilled by vessels belonging to foreign companies and these vessels are most often registered as FG (Foreign Going) and not converted to NCV (Near Coastal Vessel). Companies cannot recruit people with NCV certificate to these vessels, therefore they are always in need of candidates with FG license. Here you have good scope and there are some other things that you can do to expand the same. For instance If you are holding a recent PCC, probability of getting a call is even more but you need not to have this certificate if you are joining a vessel which is under some other charter. Apart from Indian waters, jobs are available in Persian Gulf, North Sea, Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, Mexico and so on.

What is PCC? Can I get a job if I am holding a recent PCC ?

PCC stands for Police Clearance Certificate and is issued to Indian passport holders in case they have applied for employment, visa or residential status. This certificate just states that the concerned person is not involved in any crime case as per records and is issued either by Commissioner or District Police Chief in that particular area. The procedure to apply for PCC varies from place to place and there would be a fee applicable which is 1000 INR in my area.

Now, why PCC required ? When you join any of the vessels under ONGC charter, you are required to have ONGC pass in hand. To get this ONGC pass, you need to submit your PCC and the PCC should be valid. The validity of PCC is only 6 months. Trust me, there are a lot vessels under ONGC charter and the crew change of officers normally happens every 3 months, that means couple of vacancies.

Anyway, you do not need to worry about ONGC pass and all. The company will do everything on your behalf and my whole point is that, if you have a PCC in hand, the possibility for a job increases by 50%. You can highlight the possession of PCC in the subject column when you apply for a job on mail, this will catch their attention. As per today's market, the starting payment would be in the range of 450 USD to 1500 USD depending upon the company and charter when you join as 3rd engineer or 2nd officer for the first time ( Usually you will not be joining as 4th engineer or 3rd officer. More information about 'how to join offshore' can be read in my other article. The link has been added in the bottom of this post ). Though the salary is relatively less, it could be a good start.

Hard to get a job as Trainee Engineer or Deck Cadet on ship?

Hello there ! For the past few years, I have been noticing how difficult it has been to get a job as trainee marine engineer or deck cadet on ship after completing marine engineering or nautical science course even from a well recognised maritime institute. The main reason behind this would be the approval of so many substandard institutions by the government in recent years, because of which the number of students graduating every year is far more than the number of job openings that we have. Along with this, a lot of job agents, mostly fraud ones have come up offering jobs in known and unknown companies taking a huge amount of money. You would wonder that the average agent fee they are charging has been above 3.5 to 4 lakh INR for a normal company and 5 to 6 lakh INR for a well known highly paying company which is one third of actual engineering course fee itself. The funniest part in fact is that the agents get only 10 to 15 % of the fee and the rest goes to the peopl
